How to Keep a Rose Bouquet Fresh for Longer

A fresh rose bouquet can brighten any room, but without proper care, the blooms may wilt within a few days. With the right techniques, you can extend the life of your roses and enjoy their beauty for up to a week or more.

Start with a Clean Vase

Before arranging your rose bouquet, wash the vase thoroughly with hot, soapy water to remove bacteria and residue. Rinse it well and, if possible, disinfect with a weak vinegar solution. A clean vase prevents bacterial growth that can clog the stems and shorten the life of your flowers.

Trim the Stems Properly

Using sharp scissors or a knife, cut about 1 to 2 inches off each stem at a 45-degree angle. Cutting under lukewarm running water helps prevent air bubbles from blocking water uptake. Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline, as submerged foliage promotes bacterial growth.

Use the Right Water and Additives

Fill the vase with lukewarm water and add the flower food packet that often comes with your rose bouquet. If no packet is available, you can make a DIY solution: mix 1 teaspoon of sugar, a few drops of bleach, and 1 teaspoon of lemon juice or vinegar per quart of water. Sugar feeds the flowers, while bleach and acid inhibit bacteria.

Change Water Regularly

Replace the water completely every two to three days, or sooner if it becomes cloudy. Each time you change the water, re-trim the stems by about inch and add fresh flower food or DIY solution. Wipe the inside of the vase to remove any slime before refilling.

Remove Wilting Blooms Promptly

Check your rose bouquet daily and remove any yellowing leaves or wilting petals. This prevents decay from spreading to healthy blooms and keeps the arrangement looking fresh.
